Bio

Kaler Q Huang (b. 1999, Birmingham) is a British Chinese artist based in London. He paints on silk, drawn both to its ethereal quality and history in global trade. Interested in the tradition of narrative painting, his works explore forgotten histories, incorporating wide-ranging references from Chinese landscape painting, literature, the history of the Chinese diaspora, biblical stories, folklore, and popular culture. Previous bodies of work have explored masculinity, the history of fitness culture, and the Chinese Labour Corps during the First World War.

Previous exhibitions include Solitary Light, Morphe Arts, St Barnabus Dalston, London (2026); The Chinese Labour Corps, Camden Chinese Centre, London (solo, 2026); Journey to the West, Marylebone Art Space, London (solo, 2024) and Reclaiming Magic, curated by Yinka Shonibare, Royal Academy of Arts, London (2021).

Huang holds a BA in History from Durham University and an MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art. He received an Elephant Trust Grant in 2024 and was selected for the Morphe Arts residency in 2026. He can be found on Instagram @kqhuangart .
