Tokens of Masculinity

Body of work on objects and themes related to historical coming-of-age rituals. Addressing the void in modern Western culture surrounding the meaning of masculinity and the values it upholds, this series looks to history and across cultures to reexamine the symbols, rituals, and objects that have defined male identity.

C. S. Lewis coined the term 'chronological snobbery' to describe the 'uncritical acceptance of the climate of our own age and the assumption that whatever has gone out of date is on the count discredited.' These works seek to uncover historical and cross-cultural insights through which to understand masculinity and coming-of-age rituals today.
